Actor Ranveer Singh recently landed in controversy after a video of him mimicking the Daiva sequence from Rishab Shetty’s Kantara at a public event went viral. The clip sparked widespread criticism online, with many netizens calling the act disrespectful. Although Ranveer later issued an apology, an FIR was registered against him on Wednesday at Bengaluru’s High Grounds Police Station.
According to media report, an FIR has been registered against Ranveer Singh on charges of hurting Hindu religious sentiments and allegedly disrespecting the Chavundi Daiva tradition of coastal Karnataka. The case has been filed under Sections 196, 299, and 302 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
As stated in the FIR, the alleged incident took place during the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa on November 28, 2025. The complainant has claimed that Ranveer made objectionable remarks and staged a performance that mocked and showed disrespect towards sacred elements of the Daiva tradition.
The complaint was lodged by Bengaluru-based advocate Prashanth Methal. He alleged that Ranveer Singh mimicked the expressions linked to Panjurli and Guliga Daiva, presenting them in a crude, comic, and derogatory manner. Methal further claimed that the actor referred to Chavundi Daiva as a “female ghost.”
In his complaint, Methal stated that Chavundi Daiva is a deeply revered guardian deity symbolising divine feminine energy in Karnataka’s coastal regions. He alleged that describing the deity as a “ghost” amounted to a serious misrepresentation and caused hurt to religious sentiments.
As per reports, the case has been forwarded to the 1st Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court in Bengaluru and is scheduled to be heard on April 8.
